The two of them sat there for a long while, staring at the cave that housed that deadly machine. Marco’s body still lay beside them.

“This is going to attract attention...” Josef commented. “Much unwanted attention.”

“Then it cannot stay there.”

“No, no it cannot. If it does then it is certain that more of these armies will come. My people. The Americans. The Soviet Union. They will come and they will take it. We need to get it out of here. You need to get it out of here.”

Shogo nodded in understanding.

“Can the soldiers that sneak you over here transport that machine?”

“Yes, they could. I have always thought that moving it might be an option. They can do it.”

“Good... because they will have to. Clearly this is not the safest place at the moment. Japan might not be either, but it will be better hidden there than it is here. I trust that you will find a good place for it, won’t you?”

“Yes. I will.”

They sat there in silence beside the corpse of their fallen ally for a long moment. Josef cranes his head to look over the Japanese man.

“Then it is best that this is where we part ways.”

It was not an easy thing to say but the fact that one of their men lay dead beside them made it obvious that the time had come for their alliance to split apart. They had taken all the risks, conspired against their own nations and the three of them had remained loyal to each other to the very end.

Shogo didn’t look him in the eyes, but he gave a single resolute nod, looking at the cave that housed that machine. “Yes. I will take it back to Japan. I will make sure it is kept safe from those that would misuse its power. And you... you can go to Japan as well if you wish. We can get you there.”

“I appreciate the offer, I really do,” Josef replied. “But no, my place is here. Close to my home.”

Shogo finally looked into his eyes. “Then what will become of you?”

“I will continue to keep playing my role as nothing more than a loyal and proud soldier of Hitler. I have worn that skin for some time now and while it is not comfortable, I think I can wear it for a short while longer... and if I can’t..., well, then I will at least show them who I am before my end.”

“And what about Marco?” Shogo gestured toward the dead man lying next to them. “How will his journey end?”

“It already has, my friend.”

“You misunderstand. What is to become of his body?”

“I say we will burn it. Get rid of any evidence that he was ever here at all. He will vanish just like that machine will. We might as well get rid of the Americans’ bodies.”

Shogo nodded again. “Yes. That would be for the best.”

They spent the next while cleaning up, building a pyre for the corpses of the American soldiers that the machine had choked the life out of as well as a separate one for their fallen Italian friend.
